After the Delhi High Court's landmark judgement, Pub owners welcome homosexuals with open arms, landlords are ready to rent out their houses to gays and lesbians and even the film fraternity in the south is happy about it

Happy hours?

Will gays now be able to walk into pubs hand in hand? And will pub-owners welcome them with open arms? We find out

This has nothing to do with going to pubs getting easier. I think going anywhere will now be easy. You no longer will be treated like a criminal. The impact will be quite massive now.
Sidharth Aravind, convenor, Gayasyou

It's a very positive move and homosexuals don't have to be scared any longer. They can now live freely. Even Aids will now reduce. Going to pubs will also be easy now. You cannot force anyone. None of the gays can be forced to do anything.
Ramesh Dembla, fashion designer

I don't know how much difference it will make now. It will definitely have an impact on young people. Obviously, the gay population is now rejoicing and the rest of the population is annoyed. I personally feel that it is a positive move. The whole issue was on a slippery slope; it had to go in favour of gays and lesbians.
Vidwath Shetty, writer

Yes, going to pubs will now be easy though I don't go to pubs often. Even earlier, there were a lot of gay parties held secretively but now they can announce them officially.
L Romal M Singh, writer

Yes, absolutely. I support gay/lesbian rights. It will never be a problem at my place. They are always welcome for couple nights as well as our regular nights.
Shibu Thomas, owner, F bar and kitchen

Of course. We used to do a party even earlier for gay groups. We are very liberated and will continue to support them. It is their prerogative. We don't any problems. Gay couples will be allowed after profiling them and will be most welcome. We will not stop them.

Star speak

I don't think the verdict will change my perspective. I am old enough to know what I am doing and don't get influenced and I feel the younger generation also shares the same perspective.

I know of friends who are gays and this decision will make them happy. Most of my make-up artistes and friends are gays and they have been a lot of fun and I accept them.

I remember my make-up artist and I were once shooting for a film in London and it was a lot of fun as we were both checking out the guys."
Ramya, actress

It is a very important verdict which the gay/lesbian community has been waiting for. Nobody is imposing anything on anyone and it should be accepted.

There's always apprehension over something new but eventually people get over it.

I don't think it will affect the younger generation as they are smart and know what they want.India is a developing country and since this judgment has been passed, India is becoming modern. So far, they had no rights and now they do. If the law can accept it, people should too.
Sharmila Mandre, actress

We have a lot of hypocrites
"The verdict should have come a long time back. It will give homosexuals the opportunity to move about in the open and not be scared. Homosexuality is practised openly elsewhere but not so in since India has a lot of hypocrites.Since it is inherent, it is important for us to accept them rather than shun away.

Welcome home

Swetha Popat spoke to a few landlords to find out if they are open to renting out their houses to gays or lesbians.

" I do have a house, but won't rent to out to gays or lesbians. I have nothing against them personally, but my parents are very conservative. They will never encourage such an idea, and I don't want to convince them otherwise."
Arun, 28 years, regional manager, Big 92.7

"I own a house in an apartment. People there might not accept gays or lesbians. But I don't mind and I think every individual has his or her own choice to make in life. If people do approach me, I could get the permission from my apartments, I don't think they have to be homeless because they are gays or lesbians."
Ravi, 36 years, self-employed

"I don't have a problem renting out my house to gays or lesbians. Its my house and its my choice, I will rent it out to anyone who is need of it."

"I will definitely rent my house to gays or lesbians. The society has to accept them as they are; they have the rights to everything as any other normal person do. What people do with their personal lives, behind closed doors, is not a public issue. People should let them be."
Vinod Edwin, 29 years, regional manager, Mudra Marketing Services
